WHEREAS, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribe is governed by a Tribal Council make of elected representatives who act in accordance with powers granted to it by its Constitution and By-Laws; and

WHEREAS, tourism is one of the important growth industries in the domestic and international economics, providing opportunities in many areas [i.e. service, transportation, and art industries] as well as excellent means of diversification to Tribal Gaming and other industries; and

WHEREAS, responsible tourism development requires informed, intelligent decision-making on the part of Tribal Government to assure protection of sovereignty, cultural integrity and the natural environment; and

WHEREAS, the Tourism Office is responsible for the promotion as well as protection of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribe which includes stories, history, traditional cultural properties, sacred, burial, and archeological sites, and our way of life; and

WHEREAS, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and the Tourism declared the following areas off limits to tourist:

  • Ceremonial Grounds or Sites
  • Sacred and Burial Sites
  • Archeological Sites
  • Traditional Cultural Properties
  • And other areas deemed as important to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribe; and
WHEREAS, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribe sees the importance of protecting the following areas within the Tribe’s concern and priorities, as worthy goals that should serve to enhance responsible Tourism Development in Indian Country;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Council hereby supports the protection from the following areas, Ceremonial Grounds or Site, Sacred and Burial Sites, Archeological, sites to be coordinate with the Tribal Historic Preservation Office to protect these sites;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Chairman and Secretary of the Tribal Council are hereby authorized and instructed to sign this resolution for and on behalf of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribe.
