On March 23, 2010 the President signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This act amended Title V of the Social Security Act to include a new State formula grant program, the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP). PREP funds are to be used to educate adolescents on abstinence and contraception to delay pregnancy by educating individuals about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's), Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDs), and at least three adulthood preparation subjects.
These adulthood preparation subjects are:
- Adolescent Development
- Educational and Career Success
- Financial Literacy
- Healthy Life Skills
- Healthy Relationships
- Parent-Child Communication
PREP is a key source of support that will promote and increase teenage pregnancy awareness, risks, costs, and complications associated with teen pregnancy.
